ITR DUE DATE EXTENDED FOR AUDIT CASES

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 in specified audit cases. The ITR filing deadline has been extended from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026.

What Is the New ITR Due Date?

As per CBDT Circular No. 07/2026 dated 28 September 2026, the due date for furnishing the Return of Income for AY 2026-27 has been extended as follows:

• Earlier ITR due date: 31 October 2026
• Revised ITR due date: 21 November 2026
• Applicable to: Persons mentioned at Sl. No. 2 in the Table below Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

The extension provides an additional 21 days for the specified taxpayers covered by this category. The Income Tax Department has also confirmed the revised due dates on its e-Filing portal.

Tax Audit Report Due Date Also Extended

Along with the ITR filing deadline, the specified date for furnishing the applicable audit report has also been extended.

• Earlier audit report due date: 30 September 2026
• Revised audit report due date: 21 October 2026

This extension is relevant to taxpayers covered under the specified category referred to in Section 139(1), including applicable cases where accounts are required to be audited under the Income-tax Act or other applicable law.

Is the Extension Applicable to All Taxpayers?

No. The extension from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026 is not a general extension for all ITR filers.

Taxpayers should determine their applicable due date based on their filing category and the requirements of Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

Taxpayers whose original due date is different from 31 October 2026 should not automatically assume that the revised date of 21 November 2026 applies to them.

What Should Eligible Taxpayers Do?

Taxpayers covered by the extension should use the additional time to:

• Complete accounting and reconciliation of books of account.
• Finalise the applicable tax audit.
• Furnish the audit report by 21 October 2026, wherever applicable.
• Reconcile TDS and TCS credits with Form 26AS and AIS.
• Review income, expenses, deductions and other tax details.
• Calculate and pay any remaining tax liability, wherever applicable.
• Complete and verify the Income Tax Return by 21 November 2026.

Key Dates at a Glance

Tax Audit Report:
30 September 2026 → 21 October 2026

Income Tax Return:
31 October 2026 → 21 November 2026

Conclusion

The CBDT's extension gives specified audit-category taxpayers additional time to complete their tax audit and ITR filing compliance for AY 2026-27. However, the revised deadline of 21 November 2026 should not be treated as a universal ITR due date.

Taxpayers should verify their applicable filing category and ensure that all required audit, tax payment and return-filing compliances are completed within the prescribed timelines.
